Much has been written over the years regarding the attraction of parties in a loving relationship and what makes one work better than another.  What comes up more and more often in recent years is the issue of Friendship as being part and parcel to the best of loving relationships.  To understand how friendship impacts loving relationships we need to understand friendship itself.   A detailed discussion of the depth of that issue is beyond the scope of an article but the basics are worthy of review.  

Why one person becomes the true and lasting friend of another is based on many things but the root of them seems to be mutual respect.  If you truly respect someone then you have an open spirit toward that person and your heart is open to a more lasting depth of relationship.  This is true of any type of friendship and in any context.  What normally goes with respect as the second and third key elements of friendship are shared interests and a blending of personalities.   Shared interests may not be shared interest in the same thing as much as interest in the other persons interests.  Some women love men in uniform, although they have no real wish to wear the uniform.   Maybe it is the association of danger or authority, perhaps a dedication to duty, some are truly attracted although they have no wish to enter that career.

Personality blending is the other characteristic mentioned above that tends to be a determinant of the potential for real friendship.  Personality blending – the term used by the experts – does not necessarily mean the same type of personality.  Often it means the opposite – as opposites in relationships of all kinds – do often attract.  The blending may be the chatty, bubbly person pairing with the quiet and reserved type.   Often this mixture somehow ‘works’ and, hence, the blending occurs.
